What fabric has the best UPF?
1,Material Composition: Synthetic materials are generally better at protecting against UV radiation than natural ones. For example, polyesters and rayons typically outperform wools and cottons.
2,Color: Darker colors tend to have higher UPF ratings than lighter ones.
3,Fabric Construction: Densely woven fabric like denim or wool has higher UPF than loosely woven fabric.
4,Treatments: Some fabrics are treated with UV-inhibiting ingredients during manufacturing.
5,Moisture: A fabric’s UPF can decrease when it’s wet.
While most fabrics do provide some level of protection, their UPF ratings are not all equal or as high as you may think. For example, a lightweight, 100 percent cotton white T-shirt has a UPF of around 5.
UPF protection clothing is made by UPF 50+ fabrics which can protect your skin against the sun by blocking UV rays. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, clothing is the best way to protect your skin from harmful rays, as it doesn’t wash off or require reapplication like sunscreen.
For most sunblock fabrics for clothing, there are two traditional ways they can be made UPF 50+ fabric; known as the best fabric for sun protection:
1,Dyed Fabrics: They can be coated with colorless dyes that help block out the UV rays during the manufacturing process.
2,Treated Fabrics: They can be treated with UV-inhibiting ingredients during manufacturing.
It’s important to note that the effectiveness of UPF clothing can diminish over time with frequent use and washing. Therefore, it’s important to check the label for care instructions to maintain the effectiveness of the UPF rating.
